Mats Wilander was the defending champion but lost in the second round to 18-year-old and future world number 1 Pete Sampras. Boris Becker defeated Ivan Lendl 7–6(7–2), 1–6, 6–3, 7–6(7–4) in the final to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 1989 US Open. It was Lendl's eighth consecutive men's singles final reached, still a record.
